Every winter, Rapid City leans into its Western roots in a big way. The Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo turns the city into a working showcase of ranch culture, rodeo grit, and community fun. It is part competition, part festival, and part shopping trip, all wrapped into one packed stretch of days.
The event draws crowds from across the region for a schedule that runs from early morning livestock and horse events to high-energy rodeo nights. Organizers describe it as South Dakota’s second-largest event after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, with an estimated 331,000 attendees, around 120 livestock, horse, and rodeo events, and more than 300 vendors.
What It Is and When It Happens
The 2026 Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo runs from January 30 through February 7. Many events take place at The Monument in Rapid City, with additional activity at the Central States Fairgrounds.
The show blends classic stock show competition with a full slate of Western entertainment. Expect cattle shows featuring multiple breeds, ranch rodeos, and a deep lineup of horse events that appeal to both longtime fans and first-time visitors.
The schedule rewards both planning and wandering. Some visitors come for a specific ticketed rodeo performance, while others spend hours moving between exhibits, vendors, and family-focused areas.
What To See Beyond the Arena
A big reason the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo feels like a festival is the variety happening around the main events. The official schedule includes the CINCH Trade Show, a Western Art Show and Sale, and vendor areas designed for browsing between competitions.
Community involvement is a major part of the experience. Youth programming plays a visible role, with activities such as the Barnyard Animal Nursery, youth showmanship events, and a LEGO competition for kids ages 4 to 12 on opening day alone.
This is not just a “sit in the stands” weekend. Visitors can move freely between arenas, exhibits, and interactive spaces, making it easy to see animals up close and keep kids engaged throughout the day.
Rodeo remains the headline attraction for many fans. Rapid City’s reputation for indoor rodeo events draws serious followers while still offering an exciting first-time experience for newcomers. Concerts are also part of the schedule, including performances by Tanner Usrey with Kenny Feidler and Ole 60 with Rob Langoon.
Keep the Kids Moving After the Stock Show
After a full day of shows, shopping, and rodeo events, many families look for an easy way to burn off extra energy. Jump N Slide Adventure Park is located in Rapid City, not far from Stock Show venues, and offers a convenient indoor option for kids.
The park features inflatables, slides, obstacle-course-style attractions, and a dedicated toddler zone. Food and drink options are also available, including pizza slices, snacks, sodas, juices, and specialty coffee and tea for adults.
For families attending the Stock Show, Jump N Slide works well as a final stop before heading home, offering a relaxed, kid-friendly way to wrap up a busy day in Rapid City.
